Therapy for Substance Misuse

The goal of therapy for substance misuse is to help the clients learn healthier coping skills, reducing the risk of relapse. While we always try to meet clients where they are in their lives, we can sometimes work closely with them to learn the reason for abuse, how to face those reasons and how to avoid the pitfalls of relapse.

Substance dependence and misuse are often used interchangeably. While both have devastating effects on a person’s life, they are different. Those who misuse drugs and alcohol still may have some control over their lives, but those struggling with dependency have a disease that affects many or all aspects of their life. In addition to the risks and harms associated with substance dependency, families are affected too.

Once the client is sober and their misuse is stabilized, this process can result in trauma therapy and family counseling. Trauma therapy will teach you how to acknowledge and process your history and learn how to cope with the trauma without substance misuse. Family counseling can offer skills for your family to support your recovery and identify signs of relapse, preventing it from happening.
